About us

Founded in 1965 by Floyd D. Gottwald Jr. and Elisabeth S. Gottwald, the Herndon Foundation was established with very broad and general charitable purposes — to support educational, cultural, humanitarian, religious, scientific, and literary nonprofit organizations as well the prevention of cruelty to animals. The organizations to which the foundation has contributed have varied over the years according to the interests of the Trustees.

In 2013, the assets of the Gottwald Foundation, which was created by Floyd’s parents, Floyd D. Gottwald and Anne C. Gottwald, were added to the Herndon Foundation, thereby strengthening the Foundation’s philanthropic reach. As a result, Herndon Foundation established more specific priorities for grant making to help guide current and future trustees.
