Who Is Eligible

The Foundation awards grants to charitable organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) and are not private foundations under Section 509(a) of the IRS Code.  Qualified organizations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia are eligible to receive funding.  However, strong preference is given to organizations operating principally in metropolitan Richmond and whose services align with one or more of the Foundation’s three funding priorities.

Competitive Grants are awarded to a limited number of recipients once a year.  Qualified organizations may submit proposals for competitive review during the Foundation’s open grant request cycle beginning August 1st.

Grants support programs that align with the Foundation’s three funding priorities.  Individual grants typically range up to $25,000.  Funding decisions will be made and communicated during the third and fourth quarters.

Proposals should be submitted through a link available on the Foundation’s website once the grant cycle opens and should include:

  • General contact information
  • Confirmation of 501(c)(3) status
  • Brief description of the organization, including its mission and history
  • Amount requested and a concise description of the project or program to be funded, including specific costs a grant would underwrite and how results will be measured
  • Current operating budget
